On View: Tuesday 20 August - Saturday 14 September 2024
NORTHART was delighted host the exhibition - The Expanded Field of Print, a Print Council Aotearoa Member Exhibition.
The intent of this dual gallery, large-scale show was to encourage printmakers to explore different ways of engaging with imagery, materials, processes, and technologies. The work encompassed a full spectrum of printmaking from traditional and contemporary to experimental, ranging across floor-based, wall-mounted, and plinth-installed works to a variety of hanging installations.
Steve Lovett was the selector for the exhibition, an artist and art education researcher whose practice was concerned with printed media operating as a physical space from which to develop critical observations. Steve had set up the Interdisciplinary Print Research programme at Manukau Institute of Technology in the School of Visual Arts and currently ran the University of Auckland Printed Media Lab. He selected over 40 works to be included in the exhibition, spanning across both the East and South Galleries.
The exhibition was organised by Birkenhead-based artist and educator Di Smallfield, a long-standing member of The Print Council Aotearoa New Zealand. The Print Council was a national, non-profit organisation supporting and promoting printmaking across all regions of New Zealand. With a membership of over 300 artists, it was an inclusive organisation that embraced a wide range of ages and ethnicities. Their members’ work encompassed myriad modes of printmaking, as evidenced in the scope of work presented and the accompanying catalogue.
