Now & Then
Simon McIntyre
24 May - 2 July 2022
Simon McIntyre’s exhibition Now & Then is the second iteration of a project initiated by Ron Left at Northart.
This exhibition presents a body of work, both current and historical, which allows the viewer an insight into the ideas, processes and contexts an artist might work with over many decades, often revisiting and reinventing key aspects of that practice. The current work, for example, has emerged with significant links back to paintings from the early 80s.
This exhibition constitutes a reminder that artists never completely distance themselves from a particular idea or approach to making and often store them subconsciously in a visual and conceptual ‘library’. This is in no way a definitive selection, rather an attempt to place a few key early works in conversation with the new: opening up ideas around time, development, and connection.
Simon McIntyre studied Fine Arts at the University of Canterbury, graduating in 1977.
He later completed an MFA at RMIT University, Melbourne in 1999. His exhibition history began with participation in the Young Contemporaries Exhibition at the Auckland City Art Gallery in 1977 and he held his first solo show in Christchurch in the same year.
Since then, he has held over 30 solo exhibitions and has been included in group shows in NZ, Australia and Asia.
Simon McIntyre was a Senior Lecturer in Visual Arts at the School of Art and Design, AUT University for 25 years until 2019.
