The ABSTRAXT ABSTRAXT Exhibition

NORTHART recently concluded The ABSTRAXT ABSTRAXT Exhibition, a highly anticipated exhibition showcasing the bold and diverse expressions of contemporary abstraction
by exclusively female-identifying artists from New Zealand. Held from May 7 to July 6, 2024.

This exhibition marked a significant exploration into modernist abstraction, curated by Jessica Pearless, Co-Director of NORTHART.

The ABSTRAXT ABSTRAXT Exhibition presented a dual gallery survey, bringing together 36 artists who offered unique perspectives on abstraction rooted in Aotearoa's cultural and aesthetic landscapes.
Jessica curated the exhibition with a vision to illuminate the current dynamism of abstraction, reflecting on its historical significance while pushing boundaries towards future possibilities.

The exhibition delved into themes of timelessness, ritual, and the interplay between materiality and immateriality. Each artwork served as a testament to the artist's journey in abstraction, inviting viewers to contemplate the diverse processes and concepts underpinning each piece. The dialogue among the artworks aimed to foster a deeper understanding of abstraction's evolving nature and its resonance in contemporary art practices.

Supported by The Chartwell Charitable Trust, The ABSTRAXT ABSTRAXT Exhibition offered a robust public program. Highlights included a symposium led by Julia Waite and Linda Tyler, featuring insightful discussions with the exhibiting artists. The symposium provided a platform for artists to share their inspirations, methodologies, and the broader implications of their work within the realm of abstraction. Additional events such as artist-led workshops and curator's tours further enriched the exhibition experience, offering attendees opportunities for hands-on exploration and deeper engagement with the artworks and their creators.

NORTHART extends its gratitude to the artists, collaborators, and visitors who contributed to the success of The ABSTRAXT ABSTRAXT Exhibition. This exhibition not only celebrated the achievements of female artists in the field of abstraction but also affirmed NORTHART's commitment to showcasing innovative and thought-provoking contemporary art in New Zealand.

For those who missed this extraordinary event, The ABSTRAXT ABSTRAXT Exhibition has left an indelible mark on the landscape of modern abstraction, promising continued dialogue and exploration in future artistic endeavours.
