Matariki with NORTHART: Community, Connection and Creativity for Matariki
NORTHART was delighted to host a Matariki celebration in 2024, following the launch of our July exhibitions. We extend sincere thanks to KCFT for funding the community gathering and KLB for supporting the art materials.
The event, titled "Matariki with NORTHART: Community, Connection, and Creativity," was a vibrant occasion. Dr. P's efforts in organising the loan and art installation of 150 baby Pūriri trees at Northart Gallery were especially appreciated. Additionally, nine pūriri trees formed a small grove in our art activation zone, each symbolising a star of the Matariki cluster.
The evening celebrated community spirit with extended gallery hours, offering hospitality, shared kai, and camaraderie through artistic expression. This gathering coincided with the preview opening of the Winter Members Show in the South Gallery and Messini Palace Art exhibition Anei ahau, tō pou whirinaki - I am here, I will support you in the East Gallery:
"...the final members' exhibition at the Norman King building before our relocation to a new space in January 2024. The exhibition honours our gallery and local environment, with members showcasing works inspired by native flora and fauna. Participants were encouraged to reflect on the pūriri tree and pūriri moth, symbols that evoke personal histories and connections to the past, aligning with Matariki festivities in the Kaipātiki area."
A highlight of the evening was the presentation of a steaming Matariki pudding, served with custard and raspberry sauce courtesy of Dr. P. The event welcomed new local visitors to the gallery, including families who have recently moved into the area.
